A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use

by admin on June 10, 2010

A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use: The Smart Grid involves the use of communications and computing technology to transmit and distribute energy more efficiently. This video describes the smart grid and how it will reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency and the integration of renewable sources of energy. Featuring interviews recorded at the IEEE Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles: Accelerating Innovation Conference (2007) and the IEEE Energy 2030 Conference (2008). Produced by IEEE and ScienCentral, Inc., with funding from IEEE Power & Energy Society, IEEE-USA, and the IEEE New Technology Directions Committee (NTDC). 8 minutes running time. this is so b.s. and i am so sick of the n.w.o! we now boycott any of these greedy, energy b.s. global warming tree hugging companies…….the new light bulb breaks and pollutes with mercury, the smart car pollutes more to make than to drive, and oh no oh no the sky is falling……hmmm show me the money!

@jalexandref Thanks, but i figured it out like 2 months ago lol

@FalkonX3000
Nowadays energy is flowing just in one way. (Production to Consumers).

Small systems can produce small amounts of energy. The amount you don’t use, it could be used by someone else, but the grid have to be able to receive back the energy.

I hope this is simple… (because much more can me said about it)

Smart Grid technology will transform the way energy is distributed and consumed in the future. It will ensure both reliability and efficiency. The Smart Grid also has the capability to optimize renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and nuclear power. Transformer company, Pacific Crest Transformers has more on the smart system and its role in the energy grid. Visit their website

Captain Kirk: Scotty we need more power.
Scotty: Im giving her all she’s got captain

Maintain the grid you got and get out of the way: GE, ABB, Alstom, etc…

Energy Aggregation/Storage and distributed generation on local private grids — cut the wire to the utility (unless you want to see it to them and help them out by using their excess power at night)

When oil was discovered and the automobile was built, did they give horses motorized shoes to keep that industry alive?

When the radio became a way to communicate t, did they install them at the telegraph and post office to maintain that legacy infrastructure?

In the late 80’s when the PC became were they in the room with the Mini (VAX), Mainframe (IBM,Univac), etc. to make use of that infrastructure?

When u have WIFI, why keep TCP/IP cable connected?

Distributed generation is here.

very cool. thanks

i thought it was 30% for coal energy plants? i just saw a pie chart two days ago

Corvyn June 10, 2010 at 3:13 pm

@gamesmaster35 For sure. But its not about whats good for people its about whats good for the corporations that can make money off this technology. Prior to this it would have been difficult to make money off something like this. Think of it that way.

gamesmaster35 June 10, 2010 at 3:30 pm

@Corvyn Okay I agree the initial cost of setting up infrastructure would be high. But to not have to depend on foreign sources for most of your power would eventually pay for itself.Think of all the money used in research and development to find new oil sources. The laying down of pipes and the expense of oil dikes and dirges. Not to mention maintaining those things. And last but not least not having to worry about shortages every 30 years or so would be nice.

FalkonX3000 June 10, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I dont really seem to understand how smart grid work? Can someone explain it to me in a simpler term?

Corvyn June 10, 2010 at 5:28 pm

@gamesmaster35 Money

gamesmaster35 June 10, 2010 at 5:34 pm

@jb21uk Yeah but solar had this problem when I was in elementary school. Not to date myself but Reagan was president when I was in elementary school. What happened were they sitting on their butts for the last 20 plus years? What I read in the popular science book of that time was that they already had a solar battery in the works that would save up excess power and use it at night and when there were overcast skies.I just don’t understand why progress is so slow sometimes.

orenrocco June 10, 2010 at 5:42 pm

ELECTRICITY CREATED THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. ELECTRICITY NEVER ENDS IN SPACE BECAUSE ELECTRICITY CREATES THE UNIVERSE CYCLE. IN that case nothing ever get polluted if electricity creates everything in which it does. GLOBAL WARMING IS FAKE.

jb21uk June 10, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Because an installed solar panel, which provides intermittent power, might not actually reduce the necessary baseline generation capacity at all. The power fluctuations also make the grid unstable, and prone to blackouts. You need to smooth out the generation noise by making energy usage variable. That means making charging an electric car, or using an ac unit, more expensive for the brief lulls, and cheaper for the brief peaks.

checksandbalences June 10, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Sounds crazy but why not invest all that allocated money for renewable energy for installing individual solar panels. Two-way communication my ass.

checksandbalences June 10, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Well, its being implemented here in cali full speed. A month ago they cut off power to our neighboorhood to install the box or device on the poles. Now today there installing the “smart meters”. My assumption of this is ultimatly its not going to benifit the customer but rather just make it easier to “be more in touch” with the customer if you know what i mean. This is yet another invasion of what privacy we have left. Im pretty sure in the coming years they will be pushing for “smart “appliance

After reading the comments below, I wonder if we should waist the money and the vast resources we are all pitting into this great endeavor. I would love to go back twenty five years ago when we were laying out the framework for the Internet to see what all of these idiots would have said.

CircusMaximus09 June 10, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Brilliant…let the gov control & monitor how much energy the deadbeats and leeches use. Afterall, OUR utility bills subsidize them!

IronJackalTw June 10, 2010 at 9:03 pm

crazyassrider491,

How about a Bear or a Lion to help you figure it out!?

Better yet, a 1,000 Degree C hot iron rod up your arse would do wonder!! >=P

pacificcresttrans June 10, 2010 at 9:52 pm

World leaders are stressing on the importance of renewable energy in various sectors…With the rise in greenhouse gas emissions, the renewable energy sector like wind power is gaining popularity. Smart Grid technology will help wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower gain momentum…Companies like Pacific Crest Transformers provide energy-efficient transformers and work in the direction of Smart Grid technology. Visit the website for more.

hammocktime2002 June 10, 2010 at 10:12 pm

GREAT idea…My utility bills are high enough paying for them

heoquayhp June 10, 2010 at 10:38 pm

they can afford this if they withdraw the troops

RonaldKovacs June 10, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Actually, I am already doing this at my cottage. It is not that difficult. Costyl though.
